The Switzerland Type J Plug is also known as the Swiss 3-Pin. It is similar to the Type C “Euro plug,” except it has an earth pin off to one side.

What is a Type J plug?
The Type J plug has three round pins, including an earth pin. Even though it looks like the Brazilian Type N plug, it is not compatible with Type N sockets because the earth pin is further away from the centerline. However, Type C plugs fit into Type J sockets.
Type J electrical plug features
Switzerland has its standard, which is described in SEV 1011. This type J electrical plug is similar to a Type C plug, except that it has the addition of a grounding pin. Type J power plugs have three 4 mm round pins, measuring 19 mm in length. The center of the line and neutral prongs are spaced 19 mm apart, with 10 mm long insulated sleeves. Older versions of this plug have unsleeved pins.
Type J power plug looks very much like the Brazilian type N plug standard, but it is incompatible with it since type J has the earth pin further away from the centerline than type N: the center-to-center distance between the earth pin and the middle of the imaginary line connecting the two power pins is 5 mm. This connector system is rated for use in applications up to 10 amps. Above 10 A, equipment must be either wired permanently to the electrical supply system with appropriate branch circuit protection or connected to the mains with an appropriate high power industrial connector.
What countries use type J plug?
Type J is used almost exclusively in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
Used in countries:
Jordan | 230V 50Hz | Power socket: Type B, Type C, Type D, Type F, Type G, Type J |
Liechtenstein | 230V 50Hz | Power socket: Type C, Type J |
Madagascar | 127V 220V 50Hz | Power socket: Type C, Type D, Type E, Type J, Type K |
Maldives | 230V 50Hz | Power socket: Type A, Type C, Type D, Type G, Type J, Type K, Type L |
Rwanda | 230V 50Hz | Power socket: Type C, Type J |
Switzerland | 230V 50Hz | Power socket: Type C, Type J |
What plug does Switzerland use?
type C
Switzerland uses type C plug (2-pin), and Type J (3-pin) plugs. (Type C 2-pin plugs also fit J sockets.) Most power sockets are designed for three-pin round plugs. The standard continental type plug with two round pins, applied for many electrical travel products, may be used without problem.
Type J power plug certificate
Organization: ESTI (SEV)
The Switzerland SEV 1011 standard 3 prong 10 amp will also accept the Europlug CEE7/16. However, the connection will be non-grounded. Power cords manufactured in compliance with Swiss SEV 1011 standards. ESTI agency approvals and certifications are available on the product specification page.
We have made a very detailed graphic introduction in the article safety marks for more information about the safety certification of power cord plugs.
